Deep scarring doesn’t response as well, but light scarring can be minimized with lasers. This is a very expensive treatment that usually must be done multiple times to get the desire effect. And remember, someone is essentially burning the top layer of your skin with a laser. The damage might not be as painful or obvious as with peels and dermabrasion, but it’s damage nonetheless.

• Collagen injections seem pretty innocent next to those methods. This is simply the injection of collagen under the skin to puff out the scarred areas. If it’s done poorly, you can end up with a lumpy appearance. And this has to be repeated every 3 to 6 months, as it’s not a permanent fix. That adds up to a lot of money, and a lot of painful injections.

• Surgical methods like punching a hole in the skin and covering with a smooth skin graft, or injecting fat into the scar beneath the skin are used for deep scars, but are painful, expensive and may have to be repeated.
